Reverend Dr. Lorina Marshall-Blake
Lorina Marshall-Blake is the president of the Independence Blue Cross Foundation (the Foundation), a charitable, private foundation founded in 2011, and also the vice president of community affairs at Independence Blue Cross (Independence).
In her role with the Foundation, she leads strategic, programmatic, and operational efforts to fulfill the Foundation’s mission to lead sustainable solutions that improve the health and wellness of the community. Under her leadership, the Foundation has established itself as a collaborator, innovator, and thought leader in addressing emerging health needs in southeastern Pennsylvania.
As the vice president of community affairs, Marshall-Blake develops and manages relationships with community partners to advance Independence’s social mission efforts.
Marshall-Blake is passionate about giving back to the community. She is involved with more than 30 professional and civic organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League and the United Negro College Fund, and is the former president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omega Omega Chapter. She is also an associate minister at the Vine Memorial Baptist Church in Philadelphia.
Currently, she also serves on more than 25 non-profit boards and committees including the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association — Corporate Responsibility Committee, The Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia’s Paradigm Award & Scholarship Committee, the Urban Affairs Coalition, and the Urban League of Philadelphia. Marshall-Blake also serves on Drexel University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions Executive Advisory Council and Rutgers School of Nursing — Camden Dean’s Leadership Circle. She is also an Honorary Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and was appointed to the National Advisory Council on Nursing Education and Practice.

The Black Women’s Educational Alliance (BWEA), Inc.® Philadelphia Chapter is seeking applications for the 2024-2025 BWEA Scholarship program for individuals who meet the eligibility criteria listed below.
​
BWEA, Inc.® is a service organization which was established in 1976. The mission of our organization is to bring together women of diverse backgrounds to provide opportunities for women to grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking, support, and recognition.

Below you will find the application for the 2024 - 2025 BWEA Scholarship opportunity for General Education high school students. Please note you can only apply for one and that all completed application packages must be received electronically by Saturday, April 12, 2025, 11:59 pm. Applications with corresponding documents that are submitted electronically must be submitted using this platform in a single application. Applications recieved after Saturday, April 12, 11:59 pm will not be processed. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
**A total of Three (3) scholarships will be awarded to General Education students using the following criteria:

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must:

Be an African American female or male
-
Be a Philadelphia resident only
-
Be a Philadelphia Public or Charter High School Senior
-
Have a minimum High School GPA 2.9 on a 4.0 scale
-
Plan to attend an accredited 2-year or 4-year college/university and provide proof of acceptance.

Have participated in at least a minimum of 15 hours of documented community service during the academic 2024-2025 year. Virtual hours are accepted.

Two letters of recommendation from a teacher or educational administrator (either or).
Award recipients will be notified by May 3, 2025 and will be expected to attend the scholarship luncheon on May 17, 2025. Two complimentary tickets (for the recipient and 1 guest) will be provided.
